About Me
Hi. I'm Li, and I moved here from Korea when I was three years old. My mom is Korean, but my dad is half American, which is why we came here. We speak both Korean and English, and go back to Korea every summer so we will always appreciate our roots.
My mom is very traditional, and my dad isn't much better, although my younger brothers challenge them a lot. Since I'm the oldest and a girl, my parents are very strict and pressure me to get good grades. I care about my grades, but growing up in America, I have different values and beliefs than they do. I want to be able to tell them that, but I don't want to seem disrespectful. It seems like when I try, I just mess things up and end up angry. One of my two brothers is only a year younger than me, so he takes my side a lot and always seems to know what he thinks. Me, I keep flip-flopping. Some of the time, I feel like I'm cool with my life, then all of a sudden, wham-- I'm furious with my parents and hiding in my room in tears. What's wrong with me?

Hey, I'm like that with my parents, and they're both American! Sometimes I want more independence from them, and sometimes I don't mind it the way it is. Feels kind of like a roller-coaster.

Hey, are you sure it's not because you're stressed out? When I'm stressed, I get really irritable with everyone, even my friends. One time I had a huge fight with my best friend because something she said set me off. Normally I wouldn't get upset, but I was so stressed about other things that I just lost it. Maybe your up and downs are because of that?

I know what you mean. One minute you can feel incredibly happy and the next seriously depressed. And sometimes how I'm feeling about myself can make me treat my friends and family, one way or another. If you're in a good mood, it takes a lot more to upset you than if you're in a bad mood.

You need to pay attention to problems in your relationships ... My psychology teacher says it's a good indicator of depression, and that girls who are very depressed withdraw from their friendships. Sometimes they can't keep relationships going because of their rollercoaster emotions ... sound like anyone you know? That's a sign it's time to get help.
