North Country Rock-N-Wilderness
To the wilderness and back again: Challenge yourself on this multi-sport adventure!

Up for a challenge this summer? Picture yourself on a ropes course and scaling a rock wall, sea kayaking on a beautiful lake and then take off on a multi-day canoeing adventure through one of the most pristine wilderness areas in the country.

Picture It

Your adventure starts by heading to the stunning North Shore of Lake Superior. With the encouragement of your fellow teammates, you will push your limits on a high ropes course and climb a rock wall. Spend the evening sea kayaking Lake Superior or another near by lake. We will travel to our Girl Scout canoe base in Ely, MN.

After a day of training and preparing, you will paddle north in your canoe to Canada where you will spend 12 or 15 days building leadership and outdoor skills that will last a lifetime. You and your small group will paddle, portage and camp in the Canadian’s Quetico Provincial Park and Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Experience something few others ever will and reach your potential in ways you never thought you could on this high adventure experience.

15 day trip - $950.00

All trip participants must be between the ages of 15-18 years old at the time of the event.

Day 1 arrival and travel to the north shore, Day 2 Rock Climbing and Kayak, Day 3 Ropes Course, Day’s 5-14 canoe trip, Day 15 depart

12 day trip - $850.00

All trip participants must be between the ages of 13-15 years old at the time of the event.

Day 1 arrival and travel to the north shore, Day 2 Rock Climbing and Kayak, Day 3 Ropes Course, Day’s 5-11 canoe trip, Day 12 depart

Ropes Course and Rock Wall are located in Finland, MN at the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center of the North Shores of Lake Superior. The Northern Lakes Girl Scouts Canoe Base is located 15 miles north of Ely, MN, USA. You will launch your canoe out of our bay on Moose Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and paddle to Canada's Quetico Provincial Park. You'll fly in and out of Duluth, Minnesota Airport, where staff will be waiting to drive you up north on this adventure.

Be It

We welcome any participants from all skill and interest levels. No previous canoeing experience is necessary. We look for an open mind and a positive attitude. We include those with a different physical and/or health restrictions. We leave the final decision to our medical professional.

Plan It

  • Session 1; July 12–26, 2011; $950
    Must be 15–18 years old at the time of the event.
  • Session 2; July 26, 2011–August 6, 2011; $850
    Must be 13–15 years old at the time of the event.

Get It

You’ll need to have:

  •  Lightweight sleeping bag, in a stuff sack
    • Large, flannel, sleeping bags are discouraged because of size, weight, and difficulty in drying
    • Look for a mummy-shaped sleeping bag of synthetic material
  • Rain gear (pants and jacket no ponchos)
  • Sturdy hiking boots
    • Feet will be wet much of the time on the canoe trip. A lightweight hiking or field boot is best. The purpose of the boot is to provide secure footing and ankle support.Insulated boots, rubber boots, or any boot that holds water will be very uncomfortable
  • Once accepted, a detailed list of equipment and clothing will be sent

A $100 deposit will be due immediately upon acceptance to this event. (It's part of the event fee, not in addition to it.)

You'll also need to finance:

  • Round-trip travel to and from Duluth, Minnesota Airport
  • Personal spending money
